Sherman Hemsley (February 1, 1938 – July 24, 2012)

In some sad news, George Jefferson himself, Sherman Hemsley, has passed away at the age of 74.  I used to love watching the Jeffersons when I was a kid (though looking back at it now I didn't understand a lot of the context).  Only years later would I find out that the Jeffersons was actually a spin off of All in the Family (a show I had never seen until a few years ago).

The Jeffersons was a show about a poor family who strikes it rich through George's dry cleaning company (this is what happened to transition between All in the Family and the Jeffersons).  It was a comedy but often dealt with racism and other social issues.  Like All in the Family's Archie Bunker, George Jefferson was very opinionated and racist, which lead to clashes between the characters when they were both on the same show.

Unfortunately it seems like many of the tv greats from the past are gone now, with Andy Griffith passing away recently and now Sherman Hemsley.  At least they will all live on in reruns from their classic shows.
