‘Star Wars’ films to come yearly starting in 2015

Disney is turning “Star Wars” films into an annual summer ritual.

Walt Disney Co. chairman Alan Horn announced Wednesday that the studio would release films set in a galaxy far, far away every year starting in 2015.

The parade of films will start with “Star Wars: Episode VII,” directed by J.J. Abrams.

Horn said the studio will then alternate films in the new “Star Wars” trilogies with spin off films drawn from the same universe.

What do you think?  Is this overdoing it or the more the better?

Anderson Silva: Like Water

Anderson Silva fans (and MMA fans in general) will probably want to check out this documentary.  It follows Anderson Silva from the time period when everyone hated him (after his fight with Damian Maia) through his first fight with Chael Sonnen.  It’s interesting seeing behind the scenes training footage, how he deals with the pressure coming at him from various sources and what his daily life is like.  We tend to think of these athletes as machines but they are human beings like everyone else.

This documentary doesn’t just show the good things in Anderson’s life.  It shows when his fans are upset with him.  When UFC boss Dana White is angry at him and even when his own manager is frustrated with him.  We follow Anderson around when he wants to skip out on autograph signings and him watching video of Chael Sonnen talking smack about him.  It’s definitely worth a watch if you are interested in the behind the scenes stuff.  Anderson does come across as kind of cocky and self-centered sometimes, but he also cares about his family and friends.  It’s a realistic look at who he is.  Nothing is sugarcoated.

Justice League: Doom Review

I haven’t really been a fan of too many of the animated movies from Marvel or DC.  Typically they seem rushed and don’t take as much time as needed to really flesh out the plots.  They do tend to be stand alone stories, which is good if you haven’t followed any of the cartoons that have come before hand.  Justice League: Doom is no different.  It jumps right into the action, involving a plot by Vandal Savage to destroy the Justice League.  I won’t give away any major spoilers but there is much more to the movie than what I described.

There is some pretty decent action in the movie.  The Justice League is pitted up against some of their common foes.  Fans of the old Superfriends cartoon will remember the Hall of Doom shown in the movie.  Due to the short running time (slightly over an hour) I wouldn’t recommend buying it, but if you have a chance to watch it on netflix or rent it, it’s worth a watch, especially if you are a fan of the animated movies or the Justice League in general. It does have a small amount of bad language in it and some dark themes, so I wouldn’t recommend it for kids

One thing I do really like about it is that it’s a Justice League movie not involving an alien invasion.  Seems like most of the plots involving the Justice League or the Avengers (even on the big screen) tend to revolve around aliens, so that plot gets a little tiring.  With talk of a big screen version of the Justice League, a plot like this one might be a better way to go, especially to distinguish it from the Avengers film.  So again, it’s nothing special but it isn’t bad.  I’d give it 2.5 out of 4 stars.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 10: Home (Part 2)

If you have not read the first part to this review, you may do so here: The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 10: Home (Part 1)

Carol and Axel seem to be hitting it off while they are fortifying the prison against the Governor.  They are flirting a bit and setting up barriers so they will be able to attack from the high ground when the Governor does arrive.  Merle and Daryl overhear some people being attacked.  They argue over what they are actually hearing but end up checking it out.  Daryl comes to the peoples rescue and kills most of the walkers by himself.

After saving the day, Merle wants to steal everything of value from those people as a reward but Daryl stops him, which starts a conflict.  It’s revealed that Merle and Daryl were going to rob the camp in the first season when they got the chance, but Merle losing his hand stopped that.  Daryl leaves Merle out in the woods by himself to head back to the prison.

Hershel talks to Glenn about his anger and how it’s going to get him killed.  Glenn doesn’t completely listen and decides to go out and look for where the walkers are getting in, by himself.  Not a wise decision.  Rick is still wandering outside the fence, in danger.  Hershel gets his attention and attempts to reason with him.  Hershel informs Rick that Glenn is being wreckless.  Rick tells Hershel that he saw Lori.  He knows she isn’t real but is still chasing her.

Axel and Carol are talking and hitting it off again, and out of no where he takes a bullet to the head!  Didn’t see that one coming!  The Governor has started his attack on the prison.  After a long shootout scene, the Governor’s men drive a truck through the main gate of the prison.  The back of the truck lowers and tons of walkers run out!  This guy is ruthless!  Rick gets surrounded by walkers and looks finished when Merle and Daryl show up and save him.  Glenn also comes back and saves everyone inside of the fence, taking them to safety inside the second fence.

Things are going really badly for our heroes.  Rick is insane, everyone is fighting with each other, the prison courtyard is now filled with walkers and the Governor easily defeated them.  Everyone better pull together soon before it’s too late!

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 10: Home (Part 1)

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here:  The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 3)

Rick is on guard and surveys the outside of the prison when he sees a strange sight.  It’s the same “ghost” that he had seen in the last episode.  He goes to her but she is gone by the time he arrives at her location (in front of some graves).  Rick turns around and sees her again, this time outside of the fence.  Once again he moves to her location.  This time she doesn’t leave, it’s Lori.  Michonne is watching Rick run around like a madman and out into danger.

The Governor has a talk with Andrea.  He says he liked her speech and she is a good leader.  The Governor asks her to temporarily become the leader at Woodbury while he gets his head back on straight and recovers from the loss of his daughter.  Merle and Daryl are out in the woods searching for food.  Daryl wants to go back to the prison.  Merle says the Governor has probably already gotten a gang together to kill everyone at the prison.  Going there would be suicide.

Back at the prison, Glenn wants to create his own raid party and attack the Governor to take him by surprise.  He doesn’t want to just wait around to die.  Hershel says so many have died at the prison already, it hasn’t been worth it.  He wants to just leave and find another place to stay.  Glenn points out that that plan isn’t really possible anymore because Hershel only has one leg and they have a crying baby to take care of now.

The Governor talks to Milton and questions his loyalty.  He wants to know if Milton would die for him, to which Milton nervously says he would.  The Governor wants Milton to keep an eye on Andrea, he no longer trusts her.  Later, out in the street, Andrea runs into Milton and wants to know where the Governor is.  Milton simply says he is out on a run but won’t give any details about it.  Andrea seems to suspect something is wrong.

After being talked out of attacking the prison, Glenn decides to do the next best thing, check the fence and see how the walkers are getting in.  Maggie and Glenn talk about what happened to Maggie.  She tells Glenn that she wasn’t raped but is angry that Glenn is bringing the whole thing up and treating her like it’s her fault.  Needless to say, their relationship is on the rocks.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 3)

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here: The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 2)

Tyreese tells his group to have patience and to let him do the talking with Rick.  Rick holds his baby and starts freaking out.  He may be wondering if she is his or maybe she reminds him of Lori, it’s hard to say.  At Woodbury, the town’s people are about to revolt.  Since the Governor won’t deal with it, Andrea does.  She comforts the citizens and gives them hope.  She makes them believe they can rebuild and live a somewhat normal life.

Carol and Beth talk about when Sophia was a baby and about Daryl leaving.  They make a comparison between how Daryl is with Merle and how Carol was with her husband Ed.  Beth is mad at Daryl for leaving but Carol says she understands he has a code he lives by and the world needs more men like that.  Carol is obviously hurt Daryl left her, but she understands.

Hershel patches up Glenn and notices there seems to be trouble between him and Maggie.  Glenn won’t talk about what the issue is but Hershel still lets him know that he cares about him like a son.  Hershel then goes to check on Maggie and she asks him if Glenn is alright.  Hershel tells her to go see for herself.  Maggie also refuses to tell her Father what is going on.

Hershel checks on Michonne (this guy sure is busy!).  Hershel tells Rick that it will be at least a couple of days until she will be able to leave.  Axel talks about how Oscar used to protect him and stand up for him.  Everyone discusses the Governor’s attack that is most likely coming and how they could use some serious reinforcements.

Rick talks to Tyreese and his group.  Tyreese says they can help with their troubles and will stay out of the way.  Rick doesn’t want them to stay.  He doesn’t trust other people anymore and his decisions are no longer making any sense, especially with the Governor on his way.  Hershel confronts Rick and tells him that he is wrong.  Rick looks up and sees a ghost (possibly of Lori).  He starts going nuts and tells the ghost to go away, everyone thinks he is talking to Tyreese and his group.  Okay!  Rick has really gone insane!

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 2)

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here: The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 1)

At the prison, Tyreese and his ground are going to bury their dead.  Some of the members of his group want to try and kill everyone at the prison and take it over but Tyreese tells them that is not how they do things and that these are good people.  After this incident, I have a feeling the two guys in Tyreese group aren’t going to make it.  Rick and Glenn get into it as well, because they went through all this effort and risk and ended up with nothing.  Glenn is also mad that Rick didn’t kill the Governor.

Things aren’t any better in Woodbury.  The citizens are trying to leave the town because they don’t think it’s safe anymore.  The Governor’s men are starting to get violent with them and the Governor himself is no where to be found.  He has locked himself in his apartment.  To make matters worse, some biters have gotten through the fence and attack several of the citizens.  After taking care of them, a victim is laying on the ground dying from his wounds while everyone around him is asking for someone to help him.  The Governor walks out of his apartment without saying a word and shoots him in the head, then walks off.

Carol and Carl have a conversation about how loud the world used to be.  They would give anything to hear planes flying overhead again and hear cars with their horns.  Carl shows regret over how he treated his mom during the last part of her life but Carol says he can’t think like that, she was proud of him.  Just then Rick pulls up to the prison and they let their vehicle through.  Carol doesn’t see Daryl and gets really worried but Rick tells her that he is still alive, he just went off with Merle.  We see just how confused and disappointed Carol is, because Daryl didn’t even say goodbye.

Andrea comes storming into the Governor’s apartment to confront him about killing that man in front of everyone and not being out there holding things together.  The Governor says if the town’s people want to leave, let them, he isn’t holding their hands anymore.  He says they have had it too easy but that ends now because they are at war.  Andrea asks why Daryl was there and he tells her he was trying to free the rest of Andrea’s friends they had been holding.  The Governor says Andrea is just passing through, just a visitor, so why should he tell her anything.  She says not to push her away.

There is a weird moment were Beth gives Rick a hug and kisses him on the cheek.  It looks like she is crushing on Rick.  Rick talks to Hershel about what happened and about the Governor and what he is like.  Rick can tell Hershel has some kind of information he hasn’t told him.  They head back to the cell block and pass right by Tyreese and his group without a word.  That kind of treatment doesn’t exactly put Tyreese’s group at ease.

Rumor: Harrison Ford Back as Han Solo

The scoop comes from Latino Review’s El Mayimbe, who says it’s a done deal, and while his sources can be solid, obviously it is not official in any way.  At this point, nothing official has come out about when Episode VII takes place or who the main characters will be.  I would imagine if the movie does take place when Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are old, they will probably not be the main characters.  They might have a similar role to Yoda’s in the other six movies.  It should be interesting to see what they come up and how things develop.

Dragon Ball Z E15: Dueling Piccolos

If you have not read my review for episode 14, you may do so here: Dragon Ball Z E14: Princess Snake

While Gohan studies and reminisces about better times with his parents, Piccolo is doing some reminiscing of his own.  Replaying the battle with Raditz in his head he splits himself into two for some serious training.  Piccolo has a lot of interesting powers that other characters on the show do not have.  It’s always cool to see him use them.

Gohan uses his high intelligence to make a sailboat which is able to travel on sand.  This will certainly help him make better time on his journey.  Unfortunately he is attacked by a giant bird.  He does manage to escape but his transportation is ruined.  Where is the flying nimbus when you need it?

After ending up on a beach, Gohan decides to find his way home.  Little does he know he is being stalked by a sabertooth tiger.  The tiger never presents any real danger to him though.  After a lot of travel Gohan eventually ends up where he started, on the beach.  He climbs a mountain to discover he is on a island.  Meanwhile, Chi-Chi’s Dad is attempting to get her to eat.

Piccolo keeps up his hard training against himself, trying to discover any weakness he may have.  Gohan trys a new method; he builds a boat but gets himself into trouble when he is out in the middle of the ocean and a storm hits.  Piccolo feels that Gohan is in danger and puts himself back together.  On Snake Way, Goku continues his journey.  Will he make it in time?

Dan Henderson vs Lyoto Machida Breakdown

Dan Henderson

Hendo is on a major win streak, defeating the likes of Fedor and Shogun.  He is also coming off of a 15 month layoff and an injury.  Being 42 years old has to catch up with him eventually as well (though he is loaded up on TRT).  Henderson has a great chin, unreal punching power and some pretty decent takedowns and scrambling ability.  He has been dropped in every fight he has had for the last couple of years but always manages to survive.  He has also benefited from people being willing to brawl with him.

Lyoto Machida

A true master of Karate.  Technical, fast, elusive.  Machida has some big wins in his career but he also has several losses lately.  He generally gets himself into trouble when he abandons his main style and gets overaggressive (Shogun II, Jones).  One of his few flaws is that he doesn’t always keep his back hand up, but from the Ryan Bader fight, it looks like he has been working on correcting that.  I wouldn’t say his chin is bad but he has shown he can be dropped if landed on solidly by someone with decent power.

The Fight

There are really only two ways I can see this going.  Either Machida is going to pick Henderon apart with his technical striking or Henderson will land a big bomb and put Machida out.  I think the first option is much more likely to happen.  Machida has a much more diverse game, he is hard to hit and he can take Henderson down if he wants too.  The longer the fight goes on the more chance Machida has to put Henderson away.  If it was a five round fight I think Machida would finish Henderson, but being only three rounds favors Dan more.

Dan Henderson has never been finished by strikes before, but neither had Rich Franklin, Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva or Ryan Bader; that didn’t stop Machida from doing it.  When Fedor stopped brawling and looked for a technical combo for the first time against Hendo, he dropped him right away.  I think Machida can do the same, and even put Hendo away early, if he is aggressive enough.  This should be Machida’s fight to lose, but so was the Rampage fight (which I thought Machida won).

If Machida wants to play it safe while also staying ahead on the judges score cards, he might want to trip Hendo to the mat and wear him out during the first round, then look for the finish in the second or third when Hendo gets more tired.  He can keep it on the feet and somply move around and dodge Dan’s attacks, but it could result in another Rampage type decision if the judges don’t think he did enough.

The Result

As long as Machida comes out smart, moves around like he normally does, protects his chin, mixes up his game and doesn’t brawl, I think he wins this.  I think it’s even possible he puts a frustrated Hendo away but it’s less likely than if it was a five round fight.  Don’t count Henderson completely out though, with the power of TRT backing him up and his H-bomb, he can win at anytime.  It’s hard to say what Henderson is going to look like after such a long layoff though.  I think it’s 70/30 Machida.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 9: The Suicide King (Part 1)

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here: The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 8: Made to Suffer (Part 2)

After roughly a three month break The Walking Dead returned to life tonight.  Overall it was a pretty solid episode, mixed things up a lot.  We pick up right where we left off, the Governor has captured Merle and Daryl and is holding them as prisoners.  Things don’t look good for the long lost brothers.  It gets even worse when the Governor tells them to fight to the death, the winner gets to live.  Merle seems to jump at the opportunity to prove himself and attacks Daryl, flooring him.

As the Governor’s men bring zombies into the arena, Merle tells Daryl to play along, it’s all part of his plan to escape.  Before Merle can even finish his thought Rick and his group burst on the scene and attack everyone.  In all of the chaos Merle and Daryl manage to escape.  Several of the Governor’s people are killed in the attack but he doesn’t seem too worried about.  The Governor wants war.  Before Rick and his crew even make it out of Woodbury they are already infighting about Merle coming with them.

As Rick’s group escapes they leave a big hole in the fence, allowing walkers to enter the town.  This should make things interesting!  Back at their vehicle, everyone is fighting with each other.  No one wants Merle coming back to the prison (except Daryl), Rick doesn’t trust Michonne and wants to get rid of her, things are out of control.  Merle starts running his mouth a little too much and Rick knocks him out with the butt of his gun.

Meanwhile at the prison, Hershel is cleaning up the new members of the prison.  They all talk about how everyone has been through such tough times lately.  They seem to be good people but Hershel lets them know that Rick has to clear them being able to stay at the prison.  Out in the woods everyone is still arguing about Merle and Michonne.  Daryl decides that if Merle can’t come back to the prison, he won’t either.  Merle and Daryl go off on their own and Rick tells Michonne that as soon as she is healed up she has to leave as well.

Rick doesn’t seem to be making very good choices here!  I know it’s on the fly but Michonne hasn’t done anything but help them and Merle, as bad as he is, will be needed when facing off against Woodbury.  Rick sees them as threats, and they might be to some degree, but at this point “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.  They may all hate each other but they won’t have time to fight when getting ready for the Governor’s assault that will surely be coming!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Synopsis

Columbia Pictures announced today that filming has begun on The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2 in New York. The film is the first in the history of the franchise that will be filmed entirely in New York City and New York State.

The sequel to last year’s critical and box office hit The Amazing Spider-Man, the film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.

In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are the producers.

The film’s key behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Dan Mindel, production designer Mark Friedberg, editors Pietro Scalia and Elliot Graham, and costume designer Deborah L. Scott.

The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Disney Confirms Stand-Alone Star Wars Films

Here is the official statement from Lucasfilm:

The Star Wars cinematic galaxy is about to experience a Big Bang. Lucasfilm is officially announcing new spinoff films that will expand the mythos and depths of the Star Wars universe in previously unexplored ways.

One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.

In a call to investors, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed while the original focus was on the highly-anticipated sequel trilogy, the idea of spinoff films was bandied about early and the additional films are now becoming a reality. “We are in development of a few standalone films,” he said, “that are not part of the Star Wars saga…there are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films.”

While I do love the Star Wars movies, I hope they don’t overdue it.  I guess it remains to be seen if this is a good idea or not.

Man of Steel’s Performance to Determine Justice League’s Fate?

Warner Bros. Entertainment CEO Kevin Tsujihara and the president of Warner Bros. Pictures, Jeff Robinov, recently had some interesting quotes in Variety about the fate of the Justice League film.

“Further out, the studio’s planning a “Justice League” tentpole — encompassing DC Comics mainstays Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and the Green Lantern — on the order of Marvel’s “The Avengers.” Will Beall is scripting but no director has been attached yet.
Stakes are high for “Man of Steel.” Other than Nolan’s Batpics, Warners has not been able to effectively exploit the DC library. Its 2011 “Green Lantern” underperformed, and a “Justice League” film wouldn’t likely be in theaters before 2015, as Warner’s top brass has indicated that they are awaiting the results of “Man of Steel,” which opens June 14, before moving further ahead.”

I think they should develop several successful characters like Marvel did before even thinking about moving forward with a Justice League movie.  What made the Avengers so big was that each of the individual characters in the film had had at least moderately successful movies of their own already.  DC hasn’t had any success yet, with the exception of Batman.  Without putting the work in, I can’t see Justice League being as big as The Avengers.

J.J. Abrams will Direct Star Wars Episode VII

Never say never!  Even though J.J. Abrams recently had an interview where he claimed he wasn’t interested in directing Star Wars Episode VII, things have apparently changed.  J.J. Abrams is now in charge of both the Star Trek and Star Wars universes.  Abrams had this to say about the Star Wars films:

“As a kid I was always a fan of special effects.  Watching movies I was constantly trying to figure out how they did it, whatever the effect was. ‘Star Wars’ was the first movie that blew my mind in that way; it didn’t matter how they did any of it because it was all so overwhelmingly and entirely great.”

Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 8: The Philosopher’s Stone

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here: Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 7: Night of the Chimera’s Cry

Picking up where we left off, Ed and Al are still at the crime scene.  Our heroes talk to Colonel Mustang about death, not being able to bring anyone back to life and the killer who has been targeting women.  The Military puts Ed in charge of Tucker’s work, which he isn’t very happy about.  Tucker was executed as part of a coverup.

Ed is so frustrated that he turns in his state alchemist watch so he can investigate the murders.  Edward runs into scar outside.  Luckily for Ed, he gave up his watch right before that because scar said he would have killed him if he was still a state alchemist.  King Bradley sends Al after the philosopher’s stone.  Winry is waiting for Ed when she sees a refrigerated truck, which is a newer invention.

Ed figures out that the truck is how the killer has been moving the bodies.  He finds Barry the Chopper’s shop.  Barry tricks Ed and knocks him out.  When Ed wakes up he finds out that Barry has removed his automail arm while he was unconscious.  Without his arm, he can’t clap his hands to perform alchemy.  Ed gets around this by drawing a transmutation circle.  Ed escapes and fights Barry.

Ed has Barry defeated and is about to kill him when Al shows up and stops him.  Hughes figured out that Barry’s truck was outside their building a lot and put two and two together.  The Military arrests Barry.  Ed returns to his State Alchemist position and is granted the title FullMetal by the State.  Ed was willing to take his job back in exchange for all of the information the State had on the philosopher’s stone.

Troll 2: Part 3

Alright guys, it has been a long time since I have worked on the Troll 2 review.  I can only handle so much of this “movie” at one time lol.  If you have not read the first two parts, you may do so here:
Troll 2: Part 1
Troll 2: Part 2

Picking up where we left off, this same friend goes into a store with the most creepy store keep I have ever seen and just does everything he is told to do.  This is one trusting kid.  Before he leaves the store he is told to go to the old house that looks like an old Church.  The overly dramatic woman from before has baked a cake for the visiting family and apparently broke into their house in order to give it to them.

Outside the store, the Dad falls asleep while reading a book about vegetables, so his son abandons him even though he just found out Nilbog is the Goblin Kingdom…tough luck Dad! lol  The kid wanders into a meeting where the Goblins (in human form) are talking about how bad meat is.  While listening in to this meeting through an opening in the ceiling he accidentally knocks a skateboard down and a hand reaches up and grabs his face.

We get a small scene where the sister is talking to her boyfriend and attempting to get him to pick between her and his friends.  Apparently he doesn’t make his choice quick enough so she punches him.  Well this is a hard choice!  Back to the Trolls, I mean Goblins.  They try to feed the kid “ice cream” (more goop).  I’m not sure why they are trying to trick him into thinking it’s ice cream when they are holding him down and forcing it into his mouth anyway!  His Dad somehow hears him through multiple rooms in a building when he is out in the street.  He comes in and gets his son, having an oddly formal conversation with the Goblins.

On the way back to their house the Dad sees his daughter arguing with her boyfriend.  He speeds down to get her and take her home but the boyfriend wants to talk.  The boyfriend is once again told to abandon his friends…so he does.  This family really hates his friends!  Back at the overly dramatic woman’s house, the friend who was at the shop comes in and seems out of it.  He really must be to not notice his other friend is right beside him in half-plant form.

Arnold (the friend who is half plant) finally gets his attention and tells him to drag him out of the house.  Instead of pulling him out of the pot, he trys to drag the entire thing out the door.  The witch or whatever she is shows back up, reveals she has super strength and a chain saw.  She uses the chain saw on Arnold that tickles him.  Okay, I guess that makes sense?!  Enough for now….

Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 7: Night of the Chimera’s Cry

If you have not read my last review, you may do so here:  Fullmetal Alchemist Episode 6: The Alchemy Exam

Ed receives the pocket watch that he earned for passing his State Alchemy exam.  After Ed shows the watch to his brother, Tucker says he will throw Ed a big party to celebrate his success.  Tucker is currently under a lot of pressure.  He has to turn in a report every year showing his findings or they will revoke his State Alchemy license.  Without his license and State funding, Tucker says he will go back to being poor.

We meet a mysterious man with a scar on his face and tattoos on his arm.   He runs off when Ed stops him and rips off his shirt sleeve, revealing his strange tattoos.  After the weird encounter, Ed moves on to what he was there for…investigating Tucker.  Something just isn’t right about him.  Tucker’s daughter says her mom left them but the military says she died.  Things are just not adding up and there is more than meets the eye here.

Ed sees a woman murdered and passes out.  It reminds him of what happened to his Mother and it is just overwhelming.  Things may go deeper than Ed thought.  The Military kicks Ed out of Tucker’s house for investing his work.  That doesn’t stop Ed though and him and Al break back into Tucker’s house later on.  Oddly enough, Tucker invites them in and shows them the Chimera he created.

In one of the most twisted and evil things I have ever seen, Tucker has combined his own daughter and dog into a Chimera in order to keep his Government funding.  This guy is pure evil!  Tucker attempts to compare Ed and Al to himself, he says they are the same.  Ed takes the sophisticated approach and pounds Tucker into the ground.  The Iron Blood Alchemist hits Ed and covers the situation up.

Ed, still determined to expose this horrendous plot, uses his alchemy to stop the truck they are removing the “evidence” in.  The Chimera escapes and comes across Scar from earlier.  He touches her and can somehow read her.  He destroys her out of mercy.  Ed and Al find the body….

J.J. Abrams on Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek 3

On the Theme of the Film:

“There’s nothing worse for me than reading what the theme of a book is or a movie and then reading it and being like: that’s the theme. The theme is you feel it…I do think that by default this a deeper movie. It’s certainly a bigger movie because the first one was kind of the origin story which is great because it’s so easy. You just introduce people and yet now they know each other so it has to go deeper.”

On dealing with the large cast of characters, which is even bigger this time around:

“Honestly, it’s never easier the next time, ever, for anything. You always think, “Oh, I’ve done that, it’ll be easier the next time.” No, it’s harder the next time. But it’s important that every character needs to be in the story, otherwise they shouldn’t be. But I wouldn’t say it was easier.”

On the persistant rumors that Benedict Cumberbatch’s character is Khan even though it he been revealed as John Harrison:

“I just can’t wait for people to see the movie.  Benedict is unbelievable. It’s a tall order, coming into that movie, because the crew of the Enterprise, that cast is so damn good and they’re wonderful to work with and they’re all good hearts.  So, to come into that group, as he did, as Alice Eve did and as Peter Weller did, and be one of the family was something that I was doubtful could happen. And he completely did it. I not only love him in the movie, but I love him, as a human being. He’s an amazing guy. I can’t wait for people to see the movie and experience what he’s done.”

On the scene from the trailer that looked like the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:

“Well, I would say that you’ve got to see the movie to see. I don’t want to give away what that is, but we’ve all seen Wrath of Khan. With one or two exceptions, we’re not idiots. We are aware of the movie. I love Wrath of Khan.”

On if he has thought about Star Trek III:

“No, sir, not yet. I’m sure that the studio would love that to be a possibility but it’s up to the audience to decide if there needs to be one…There are things we’ve talked about but there’s no script or anything, it’s just ideas.”

Hugh Jackman on The Wolverine

“You want to get me into trouble, don’t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him. And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.”

Okay, before he was saying The Wolverine was a stand alone movie, now it’s apparently taking place after X-Men 3.  The X-men movies have become a huge mess and each movie completely contradicts events that took place in the other movies, like Professor X becoming paralyzed in First Class when he was young, yet still walking in X-Men 3 and X-men Origins: Wolverine when he was much older.  It shouldn’t be that difficult to at least try to keep a consistent timeline.

I can’t really say I am excited about this movie.  It sounds like a cool storyline and could be interesting but really there have been more awful movies coming out of the X-men universe than good ones and even the best ones aren’t great (just good).  I hope they get their house in order and start making some good movies that actually make sense when viewed with the other ones but after so many failures, I don’t see that happening.  I’ll probably wait until this one is out on Netflix before seeing it.

David S. Goyer on Man of Steel

“I’m really proud of it.  I never thought I would be doing a Superman film, but I think the only possible way to top myself or ourselves on Batman is to tackle Superman whose kind of the Granddaddy of all the superheroes. He’s trickier, it’s kind of easier doing a dark character who doesn’t have any super powers but I’m really proud of what we’ve done and I can’t wait for people to see it. I think the movie is going to be the right movie for the times. I’m happy that movie is coming out in the summer, because I think it’s the kind of movie that the world needs right now.”

Don’t Ruin Superman! (Why Superman Returns Sucked) – Part 2

If you have not read the first part to this article, you may do so here: Don’t Ruin Superman! (Why Superman Returns Sucked)

In the last article I covered some of the problems with Superman Returns, like weird plot points, reusing plot lines from previous movies and a running time that is just too long.  While all of those things can bring a Superman movie down, the real issue I have with it is Bryan Singer decided to make Superman a total piece of crap! Even in our culture, if someone acted he Superman does in this movie, he would be hated by everyone.

This isn’t just any superhero, this is Superman.  He fights for “Truth, Justice and the American Way”.  He has also stood as a moral leader.  Seriously, they even use the line from the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie about him being the light that shows the way (for mankind to follow his example).  Okay, so what is Superman’s example in this movie?  For starters, he abandons the woman he loves for five years while he is off searching for a planet he already knows has been destroyed.  He doesn’t even say “bye” to her, he just leaves!

Okay, Superman is kind of a jerk there but that isn’t the worst thing someone could do.  Well, don’t worry, it’s not the worst thing Superman does.  Not only did he leave Lois for five years to check out some broken pieces of rock, he had knocked her up before he left.  He didn’t know this somehow, even though he has superhearing to the point where he can float out in space and hear everything that is going on on earth, but he can’t hear his own child’s heartbeat apparently.

Superman doesn’t stop there, when he returns to earth he finds out that Lois is now engaged and has a son (he doesn’t know this kid is his at this point).  So what does he do, stay out of the way and realize he lost her?  Nope!  Superman spends half the movie flying around outside of Lois’ house, spying on her conversations with her fiance using his super-hearing and x-ray vision.  He also repeatedly attempts to seduce Lois away from her fiance, even though he knows Richard (her fiance) is a nice guy and they (Richard and Lois) have a child together (what Superman thinks at the time).

What kind of example is this guy supposed to be to humanity again?  It’s okay to break up families because you decided after five years that you want your ex-girlfriend back?  Superman is a total scum bag in this movie when you think about!  He does eventually find out that Jason (Lois’ son) is his kid and the movie ends with Superman giving a smirk because he knows he is back in with Lois and Richard will be kicked to the curb at some point.

Actually, Lois is a dirtbag as well, she knew Jason was Superman’s kid, but allowed Richard to raise him as his own son.  It also means Lois didn’t wait very long to start sleeping with another guy after Superman left earth.  For all she knew, he was out there fighting some supervillain and saving the planet for a month.  The only person who didn’t do anything morally bankrupt in the movie was Richard, and he is the only one being totally screwed over the whole time.  In the end, this version of Superman and Lois really do deserve each other because they are both pieces of crap.

Here is hoping that in Man of Steel, Superman is back to being a stand up guy just trying to save the day.  No one goes to a Superman movie to see him be a wife stealing peeping tom.

Don’t Ruin Superman! (Why Superman Returns Sucked)

With Man of Steel only a few short months away, I thought it might be a good time to review the last reboot of Superman… Superman Returns.

Superman Returns is a movie I was really looking forward to seeing when I first heard it was going to be made.  Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge Superman fan.  Then the trailer for the movie came out and I was blown away!  It had the classic John Williams score, Marlon Brando as Jor-El; it was the Superman 3 we had all been waiting for (pretending the other Superman 3.. and 4 for that matter, didn’t exist).  What we actually got was, um, really weird actually.

From the first really out of place scene where Lex Luthor was apparently having an affair with a 90 year old woman to swindle her out of her money to when we later find out that woman’s dog ate it’s brother (or sister).  We also got several running jokes about Lex Luthor’s wigs (maybe one would have been okay but we got it, he wears a wig).  All of this would seem out of place in just about any movie, but especially a Superman movie.  It was just unneeded, weird and added to an already super long running time.

What Bryan Singer was thinking I really have no idea.  There is also the scene where young Clark is learning about his powers, and for some reason he is wearing glasses even though he didn’t need those for his disguise until years later.  It makes no sense and is never explained.  The movie has a huge running time but nothing is really even happening during a lot of it.  Just cutting out the pointless scenes dealing with seducing 90 year old women and cannibal dogs would have helped a lot.

One of the most exciting prospects about a new Superman film was that one hadn’t been made since the mid-80s.  Special effects had come along way since Superman 4.  We could finally see Superman face off against a major super villain, someone like Darkseid, Brainiac, Metallo, etc.  What we got was Lex Luthor in a plot to gain real-estate.  Hm, seems like I already saw this in Superman 1, 2 and 4.  Now I am not against references to the older movies, it’s kind of cool actually, but we waited 19 years for a new Superman movie and all we received was the same thing we had already seen before.

Not only had we seen the basic plot before (done much better), but Superman didn’t even fight anyone in the entire movie!  It was mostly him spying on Lois (I’ll get to that more in part 2 of this review) and flying around dealing with disasters caused by Lex Luthor stealing some Kryptonian technology.  Again, if we wanted to see Superman dealing with natural disasters caused by a villain, we could have rewatched Superman 1, 2, or 4.  All of the things mentioned so far are bad but none of them are as bad as the real reason Superman Returns sucked.

In part 2 of this review I am going to cover how Bryan Singer turned Superman into a total scum bag.
